Archaeology: Remains of village found near Stonehenge
|
Quote:
"A village of small houses that may have sheltered the builders of the mysterious Stonehenge, or people attending festivals there, has been found by archaeologists studying the stone circle in England. Eight of the houses, with central hearths, have been excavated, and there may be as many as 25 of them, Mike Parker Pearson said Tuesday at a briefing organized by the National Geographic Society."

FOR REAL: Robot parking garage to open in New York
|
Quote:
"Nonetheless, the developers of the Chinatown garage are confident with the technology and are counting on it to squeeze 67 cars in an apartment-building basement that would otherwise fit only 24, accomplished by removing a ramp and maneuver space normally required.
A humanoid robot valet won't be stepping into your car to drive it.
Rather, the garage itself does the parking. The driver stops the car on a pallet and gets out. The pallet is then lowered into the innards of the garage, and transported to a vacant parking space by a computer-controlled contraption similar to an elevator that also runs sideways.

Antropology: Is 'hobbit' a new species?
|
Quote:
"New computerized casts of abnormally small Homo sapiens brains are reigniting the debate over the skeletal remains nicknamed "The Hobbit."
Ever since the 18,000-year-old remains of the three-foot-tall adult female hominid were unearthed in 2003 on the remote Indonesian island of Flores, scientists have argued whether the specimen was a human with an abnormally small head or represents a new species in the human family tree. The diminutive creature [image] had a brain approximately one-third the size of modern adult humans."

"The US military revealed a heat-ray gun, the Active Denial System (ADS), to reporters this week.
The technology brings a new, more disorientating dimension to crowd control.
Rioters know where they are with a water cannon: they can see where the cooling is coming from.
Likewise, tear gas smokes before it stings and baton rounds are meant to bounce before they hit the crowd.

The breakthrough, achieved via separate research efforts and announced on Friday, involves using an exotic new material to make transistors -- the tiny switches that are the building blocks of microchips."

The Awashima Marine Park in Shizuoka, south of Tokyo, was alerted by a fisherman at a nearby port on Sunday that he had spotted an odd-looking eel-like creature with a mouthful of needle-sharp teeth.

Quote:
"Linden Lab's virtual world -- a much-hyped online amusement arcade of cartoon porn, avatars of IBM executives and frog bands -- has an annual GDP of about $220m, according to Fortune Magazine's David Kirkpatrick. That's only the size of the economy of Guinea-Bissau, one of the world's poorest countries, but pretty impressive for a virtual economy, no? No. Many transactions within Linden Lab's environment are circular, more akin to stockmarket volume rather than GDP. "

COMPUTER GRAPHICS: Pixar's latest rival: France
|
Quote:
"If the "enfant terrible" of Gallic filmmaking is making movies for "les enfants," big changes must be afoot in French cinema. Luc Besson, the director reviled by some fellow citizens for Paris-goes-to-Hollywood action films such as "La Femme Nikita," "The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc," and "The Fifth Element," has entered the lucrative market of digital animation. His new pic, " Arthur and the Invisibles," about a boy who enters the miniaturized world of backyard creatures to save his grandparents' farm, and featuring the voices of Madonna, David Bowie, and Robert De Niro, opens nationwide Friday.
Already a hit in Europe, "Arthur" signals an important milestone in French animation: with a reported $80-million price tag, it's the first big-budget French export vying to compete with American animated features.

FOR REAL: SeaPhantom- The Jet Plane/Boat Hybrid
|
Quote
"Fast boats have their appeal, but hard pounding and massive fuel consumption would leave them useless as practical maritime surface transport - nor much fun for our landlubber friends. Maritime Flight Dynamics' solution is to fly just above the wave crests, on proprietary shock dampened 'foils'. Literally, a boat with a full-functioning suspension system, similar in capability to Baja desert racers. A lifting-body airfoil design carries the craft above the sea surface in ground effect, radically reducing hydrodynamic drag. This requires less power and uses a fraction of the fuel consumption."

GAMING: The Mixed Outlook for iPhone Gaming
|
Quote:
"Despite all of the noise about the amazing potential that a touchscreen pocket computer with all sorts of fancy sensors could have as a gaming device, the truth of the matter is that like everything Apple, the iPhone is likely not going to be very game friendly.
That is because Apple wants to keep tight control over everything that goes on to their platform. Shocker!
Water Cooler Games reports that Apple reps are already referring to the iPhone as a "closed platform" and say that there will not be any public SDJ released. The reps did say you could call up the company if you're interested, but it sounds like they are going to be pretty damn strict about not letting in on their private money-making party.

SPACE: Pillars of Creation Toppled By Stellar Blast
|
Quote:
"They helped open the public's eyes to the wonders of space when they were first photographed in 1995, but a new study suggests the famous Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula might have already been toppled long ago, and that what the Hubble Space Telescope actually captured was their ghost image.
A new picture of the Eagle Nebula shot by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, presented here at the 209th meeting of the American Astronomical Society, show the intact pillars next to a giant cloud of glowing dust scorched by the heat of a massive stellar explosion known as a supernova ].
"The pillars have already been destroyed by the shockwave," said study leader Nicolas Flagey of The Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale in France.

Archeology: Ancient Roman road found in Netherlands
|
Quote:
"Archaeologists in the Netherlands have uncovered what they believe is part of the military road Roman soldiers patrolled nearly 2,000 years ago while guarding against hostile Germanic tribes at the Roman Empire's northern boundary.
Known in Latin as the "limes," the road was in use from roughly A.D. 50 to A.D. 350, before it fell into disrepair and eventually disappeared underground, said archaeologist Wilfried Hessing, who is leading the excavations in Houten, about 30 miles southeast of Amsterdam."

NEWS: Pixar Under SEC Investigation
|
Quote:
"Two months after Apple failed to find options irregularities at Pixar, the SEC is double-checking.
The Securities & Exchange Commission is investigating whether the animation company backdated options during a period before the company was bought by Disney, according to the Financial Times in London.
Backdated options essentially allow an employee to receive options for a date known to be a stock-price low, allowing the employee to benefit from the stock's rise. They are not always illegal, but failure to disclose them to the board or to investors can, in some cases, be considered a criminal activity."
