COMP SCI: Yale scientists make 2 giant steps in advancement of quantum computing
Two major steps toward putting quantum computers into real practice — sending a photon signal on demand from a qubit onto wires and transmitting the signal to a second, distant qubit — have been brought about by a team of scientists at Yale. The accomplishments are reported in sequential issues of Nature on September 20 and September 27, on which it is highlighted as the cover along with complementary work from a group at the National Institute of Standards and Technologies.

PALEONTOLOGY:Velociraptor had feathers
QUOTE:
"A close study of a velociraptor forearm found in Mongolia shows the presence of quill knobs, bumps on the bone where the feathers anchor, researchers report in Friday's edition of the journal Science."

ASTRONOMY: Astronomers find stars 7 billion light years away
Quote:
"A VICTORIAN astronomer is part of an international team that has discovered 14 galaxies, opening up a new era of galaxy hunting.

The galaxies, which are about 7 billion light years from Earth, have until now been difficult to detect, because they lie in front of bright, distant objects known as quasars."

FOR REAL: The Space Race 2.0
Quote:
"There are already several dozen space tourism ventures in various stages of development worldwide, analysts say, offering experiences ranging from a brief trip to the outer limits of the Earth's atmosphere to an extended stay in a zero-gravity space hotel. Public and private investors in places as far flung as Dubai, New Mexico and Singapore are preparing to invest hundreds of millions of dollars to develop full-blown "spaceports," complete with hotels, museums, Imax theaters and other space-themed diversions.

With the first paying passengers expected to take flight sometime in late 2009, Futron, a market research firm, predicts that as many as 14,000 space tourists will be heading into space each year by 2021, generating annual revenue of more than $700 million."

FOR REAL: Robot Maker Builds Artificial Boy
Quote:
"David Hanson has two little Zenos to care for these days. There's his 18-month-old son Zeno, who prattles and smiles as he bounds through his father's cramped office. Then there's the robotic Zeno. It can't speak or walk yet, but has blinking eyes that can track people and a face that captivates with a range of expressions.

At 17 inches tall and 6 pounds, the artificial Zeno is the culmination of five years of work by Hanson and a small group of engineers, designers and programmers at his company, Hanson Robotics. They believe there's an emerging business in the design and sale of lifelike robotic companions, or social robots. And they'll be showing off the robot boy to students in grades 3-12 at the Wired NextFest technology conference Thursday in Los Angeles."

FOR REAL: Using Salt Water as Fuel
Quote:
"John Kanzius happened upon the discovery accidentally when he tried to desalinate seawater with a radio-frequency generator he developed to treat cancer. He discovered that as long as the salt water was exposed to the radio frequencies, it would burn.

The discovery has scientists excited by the prospect of using salt water, the most abundant resource on earth, as a fuel. "

FOR REAL:The Proteus watercraft
The Proteus is a new type of craft based on what is known as "Wave Adaptive Modular Vassal" (WAM-V) design. Unlike conventional boats, the hull of a WAM-V conforms to the surface of the water. The Marine Advanced Research Company who is currently developing the WAM-V explains that its new design does not push, slap or pierce the waves but rather utilizes flexibility to adapt its structure and shape to the water surface. Instead of forcing the water to conform to the hull, the hull adjusts itself to the sea.
